About Enchanted Trail Forest Area

Enchanted Trail Forest Area

Enchanted Trail Forest Area spans over 150,000 acres of mixed coniferous forest, alpine meadows, and rocky ridgelines in the Cascade Range of Oregon. Its geographic location includes varied elevations ranging from dense lowland Douglas-fir groves to subalpine fir and lodgepole pine at higher altitudes. The forest supports a diverse range of wildlife including black bears, elk, mountain lions, and numerous bird species such as northern spotted owls and hawks. Historically, the area was home to several indigenous tribes and later loggers during the expansion of forestry in the Pacific Northwest. Today, it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service with an emphasis on conservation and sustainable recreation. Popular recreation opportunities include hiking on well-maintained trails, mountain biking through rugged terrain, fishing in pristine alpine lakes and streams, and camping at numerous developed and backcountry sites. The forest is also known for its scenic overlooks offering expansive views of the Cascades and volcanic peaks. Key landmarks include Enchanted Peak, a volcanic basalt dome, and Crystal Falls, a 150-foot waterfall accessible via a moderate hike. The forest’s mix of old-growth and second-growth stands attracts nature enthusiasts year-round, while winter offers snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Visitor appeal lies in the forest’s accessibility combined with its wild character and diverse landscape, providing a peaceful outdoor experience without the large crowds found in nearby national parks.
